Central Avenue Proposed Improvements Details

NEW! Bike Walk Alameda recommendations for Central Avenue.

Extend the two way protected bike lanes from Paden Elementary east to 8th Street (Washington Park).  This solution would create protected bike lanes from Alameda Point to Washington Park.  It would deliver people on bikes from 8 – 80 years old and beyond safely to Encinal Junior and High School, Paden Elementary, Crab Cove, Crown Beach, Webster Street Business District, Washington Park and the Shoreline Drive protected bike lanes.

The advantages of this solution:

  • creates safe lanes that separate the bicyclists from the extensive turning movements between 8th Street and McKay, particularly at Webster Street
  • Creates a roadway (approximately 45′ wide), that can be adapted for for travel lanes and parking

Below is an example of what the roadway could look like.

(Exact measurements for the bike lanes, travel and parking lanes would be determined later.)
