Heads-Up Parents: Make Sure Your Child’s Ride is Legal and Safe

With summer stretching out before us, and two wheels being an awesome way for your kids to make the most of it, you may be in the market for a bike, scooter, or an e-device. Navigating the marketplace, however, can be challenging, and making the wrong purchase can create safety and liability risks.

California law prohibits riders under 16 from operating electric devices capable of speeds greater than 20 mph. Despite this, we’re seeing many young riders using high-powered devices around town, creating hazards for themselves, pedestrians, and other road users.

Part of the confusion is that some unscrupulous manufacturers and retailers are marketing more powerful electric mopeds and motorcycles as “e-bikes,” even when they do not legally qualify as such. These are often referred to as “e-motos.”

Thankfully, the state is beginning to address this issueAmazon has stopped selling e-motos illegally marketed as e-bikes, and there is good legislation in the works that should make the market much easier to navigate in the future. But for now, families need to exercise caution — parents are ultimately responsible for ensuring that any device they purchase is legal, age-appropriate, and safe for their child to ride.
