2021 Earth Week Family Letter Writing Campaign

Dear Alameda Families – Happy Spring!

On April 20, the Alameda City Council will vote on major bike and climate friendly improvements to Central Avenue. Approval of this project will mean greater safety for our students in walking and biking to school and reduced vehicle emissions – a safer, greener Alameda!

The Central Avenue project will:

  • Create protected bike lanes from the West End to Washington Park
  • Add high visibility crosswalks
  • Serve over 5,000 school children in the area
  • Reduce collisions by 22-24 over a five year period
  • Decrease the length of pedestrian crossings

This Earth Week, we want to show our City that we support its commitment to fighting climate change and protecting our students and families as they bike and walk around the Island. We hope that you and your students will join us in providing written and/or speaking support to this project!

NEXT STEPS

Please write or help your student write a hand-written or typed letter (template below):

  • Letter should be in the child’s own words.
  • Artwork or photos are encouraged! Maybe somewhere in Alameda that you love walking or biking? a picture of the bike and walking friendly trails like Jean Sweeney, on Bay Farm, or in the West End? Picture of a green Alameda with people walking and biking?

WHERE TO SEND LETTERSBY APRIL 19

  • Please email letter and photos to info@bikewalkalameda.org OR
  • Drop off letter at 2925 Marina Drive (East End) or 312 Santa Clara Ave (West End)

All letters will be forwarded on to City Council, even if received after April 19.

Please also consider writing a letter as a family to city council explaining why improved safety on our Alameda streets and reduced vehicle emissions is important to your family. You can send the letter to info@bikewalkalameda or directly to city council by sending an email to clerk@alamedaca.gov before the April 20 meeting at 7 pm.

Thank you for helping to make our city safer and greener!
