Seasons Greetings Bike Walk Alameda Community! Another great year for us is winding down. I hope you will join us December 15th at 10am for the unveiling of the Jean Sweeney Open Space Park and its kilometer of beautiful Cross Alameda Trail. By summer 2019, you’ll be able to ride from Sherman St. to Alameda Point on fully protected bike lanes. Your support ensured that the critical section between Webster and Constitution will be safe and people will not be left to fend for themselves at two of our busiest intersections. We cannot wait. In 2018 Bike Walk Alameda pushed hard, and this month we expect the City to approve plans to restripe Main St. with bike lanes from Pacific Ave all the way to the ferry terminal. We ran another fantastic Bike To Work Day this year, and this election, Bike Walk Alameda held its first ever Mayoral and City Council Candidate forums. Officials are on the record and we plan to hold them accountable. With our friends at CASA, we co-hosted our first ever candidate forums. Based on the positions winning candidates took, the future is bright for advocates of safe streets in Alameda. The dream of a west end bike and pedestrian bridge to Oakland inches closer to reality. City staff and Bike Walk Alameda have been preparing for the next step, a detailed engineering study of the best alignment(s). The bridge has been added as a top tier project in Caltrans’ Bike Plan. We are making sure the bridge is included in other planning documents in Oakland and at the county level. These steps set the stage to get funding for the next phase. 2019 has the potential to see a big step forward. With your help, we will bridge the gaps in our budding network. The final design for Central Ave will be chosen. Clement Ave, Otis Dr., protecting access to our eastern shoreline, and our long awaited Bike and Ped Plan update are some of the items on the agenda for 2019. Thanks to you, we are working more closely and more effectively than ever with city staff. If you are able, please consider making a tax deductible donation online at: https://bikewalkalameda.org/donate/ We appreciate your year-round support and send Season’s Greetings for a safe, happy and healthy new year!
