Center for Creative Land Recycling Bike Tour Recap

On March 11, the Center for Creative Land Recycling hosted a bike tour of redevelopment sites in Alameda. In case you couldn’t join this fun and informative ride, here’s what you missed:

Stop #1: Alameda Marina (Proposed)
• Developer: Bay West Development
• Plans: Redevelop 44 acres of industrial boating and marine facilities (aka “working waterfront”) into 760 housing units; 150,000 sq ft of maritime/commercial space; public waterfront access and parks
• Further Reading: https://alamedaca.gov/sites/default/files/document-files/department-files/Planning/alameda_marina_master_plan_march_2018_opt.pdf; https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2018/02/15/concerns-about-alameda-marinas-future-expressed-amid-housing-plans/

After a slide show presentation of history, issues, and opportunities around the site, we toured the grounds and the sea wall, which will need significant work.

Stop #2: Alameda Point — Site A (Approved and now under way)
• Developer: Alameda Point Partners
• Plans: 800 housing units, including 200 affordable homes; 600,000 square feet of commercial space; 15 acres of parks; a new ferry terminal to San Francisco that will open in 2020
• Fun Fact: Rosie the Riveter worked here

We heard a lot about environmental cleanup as we looked out over Seaplane Lagoon. A few riders peeled off to nearby Almanac Brewery afterwards. 😉

Stop #3: US Coast Guard Housing — aka North Housing or Admiral’s Cove (Proposed)
• Developer: Carmel Partners
• Plans: Rehab 146 vacated and blighted 3- and 4-bedroom units as rentals
• Further Reading:https://alamedapointenviro.com/2017/11/12/housing-limit-under-review/#more-4854

Our host touted the site’s features: big, open areas between buildings, the proximity to the new Estuary Park, Main Street Ferry, and shopping at Alameda Landing.
