In a little over a week, Alameda’s City Council will consider approval of a conceptual plan to make Central Avenue safer for people who walk and bike. Bike Walk Alameda needs your help to ensure this plan gains council approval.
Let the council know you want them to say YES to this common-sense plan by attending their meeting on Wednesday, February 24. If you can’t make the meeting, you can still make your voice heard by writing the mayor and council members a letter or by filling out and e-mailing this handy online postcard to City Hall.
Safer Central supporters who are attending the February 24 meeting can join us for complementary pizza at 6 p.m. at Linguini’s Pasta & Brew, 1506 Park Street. Don’t forget to RSVP on Facebook and to show up in your biking brights!
One more fun way to support a safer Central: Join Sylvia Gibson’s Central to the Island Ride. This family-friendly ride takes place from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday, February 21; meet in the Encinal High School parking lot, 210 Central Avenue. You can RSVP for this event as well, on Facebook.
If approved as proposed, the plan would extend existing Central Avenue bike lanes from Sherman Street to Pacific Avenue and Main Street; put a new, two-way bikeway in front of Paden Elementary School and Encinal High School; and put more and more visible crosswalks on Central Avenue. It would also eliminate one car traffic lane, slowing cars to Island speeds.
