Starting in May 2016, Oakland’s Embarcadero Bridge will be closed between Fifth Avenue and Oak Street, restricting travel along this popular bike corridor. The closure will remain for two years while the city removes the existing bridge and constructs a replacement, including continuous bike lanes on both sides and a multi-use path. If you’ve lived in Alameda for any length of time, chances are you’ve met George Stephens. He’s one of the friendly staffers at Alameda Bicycle and an Island fixture who can often be seen pedaling around town or reading at a local coffee shop, and someone who is quick to offer a smile or advice about bikes.
